Description

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AV stater (17mm, 8.57 gm, 2h). NGC AU 4/5 - 3/5, marks. Posthumous issue of Babylon, under Seleucus I Nicator, ca. 311-300 BC. Head of Athena right, hair flowing loose below, across left shoulder and upswept at temple, wearing pendant earring, beaded necklace and triple crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, short parallel crest ends, the bowl decorated with coiled serpent right / AΛEΞANΔPOY / BA-ΣIΛEΩ-Σ, Nike standing facing, head left, wreath in outstretched right hand, stylis cradled in left arm; HP monogram in left field below wing, MI monogram in right field below wing. Price 3775. Remarkably crisp detailing with delicately deep toning accentuating the designs.
