Anne gold "Coronation" Medal 1702 MS63 NGC, MI-228/4, Eimer-390. 35mm. By J. Croker. 18.19gm. From an issue most frequently seen in silver, this intricate coronation piece is offered here with fully-defined golden motifs and luminous crevices. A closer inspection of the peripheries provides the spectator an immersion into the scenery created by Croker: a representation of Anne as Pallas-Athena in pose of defense, holding a shield and thunderbolts of Jupiter, against the two-faced, serpentine monster with James III and Louis XIV's faces; the symbolism underscoring Anne's power to rule and protect the British Protestant Sovereignty against the Stuart-France Catholic Alliance. Privately purchased from A.H. Baldwin in the early 1920s.
