Description

Münster. Christof Bernhard Taler 1661 MS67 NGC, Münster mint, KM77, Dav-5604. A coin that by all means should not exist at this advanced tier of preservation, with appearances more akin to many of the finest 19th century issues within this very collection, a feat in its own right. To see a 17th century specimen nearly untoned and embellished by a thick satin sheen of this caliber is quite a rare occurrence. While not as technically challenging of a city-view engraving as the previous Davenport number for the same date, the effect is still impressive in this grade, with each spire rising in clear contrast behind the numerous rooftops, all while protected by St. Paul. Across all certified Talers submitted to NGC of 17th through 19th century origin, numbering at nearly 6,300, only ten specimens match or surpass this superior representative, of which only one originates from the 1600s. As such, we expect considerable attention from the quality-minded collector of German States Talers. Ex. Johann Max Böttcher Collection (Harald Möller Auction 47, November 2007, Lot 623) From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II
