Description

Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1832-R UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM386.1, LMB-610, Guimaraes-1832-1a. Second type. Mintage: 64. A jewel from the Brazilian gold series with the same mintage as the celebrated 1822 Coronation 6400 Reis, likely indicating this issue was also struck to be offered to dignitaries on Coronation day such as the 1822 piece. One of the first gold coins of Pedro II as a 5 year-old emperor after Pedro I's abdication from the Brazilian Empire to regain his right to the Portuguese throne, never returning to see his son. A conditionally challenging issue presented here with chiseled motifs, minimally handled surfaces, and peripheral hints of luster. A subtle honey-comb patina can be appreciated in the crevices, indicative of an old cleaning. Guimaraes notes 6 pieces known with 3 of them presenting "defects", likely ex-jewelry survivors. Only the third example to hit the auction floors in 20 years, this piece will likely engage advanced Brazilian type collectors. Ex. Ponterio Auction 146 (April 2008, Lot 841) From the Petropolis Collection, Part III
