Philippe VI (1328-1350) gold Chaise d'Or ND (from 1346) MS64 NGC, Paris mint, Fr-269, Dup-258. 4.71gm. Emission from 17 July 1346. +Ph'ILIPPVS: DЄI: GRΛCIΛ: FRΛnCORVM: RЄX (double saltire stops), Philippe seated facing on gothic throne, scepter held at right, to left, rod topped by hand of justice; all within tressures with Lis in spandrels; four saltires below foot of throne / +:XP'C: VInCIT: XP'C: RЄGИΛT: XP'C: IMPЄRΛT (triple annulet stops), cross Fleury, quatrefoil within curvilinear rhombus-shaped center, inward-facing Lis in angles; all within quadrilobe with crowns in spandrels. A tempting near-gem example of the type, exactingly rendered and just as carefully maintained. Its surfaces are punctuated by lively luster that dances amongst the details, creating a shimmering effect across the flan.
