Frankfurt. Free City "Contribution" Taler 1796-HGBH MS65 NGC, Frankfurt am Main mint, KM288, Dav-2229, Schön-110, Joseph/Fellner-965b. The finest grade yet recorded at either grading surface for the date, the coin at hand contains such a visual presence as to exceed much of the competition. Struck as a levy paid to the French Revolutionary General Kleber to ensure the protection of the city--with the reverse legend attesting to the silver's origin "from the receptacles of the churches and the citizens"--the piece boasts a variegated argent patina that aids in making its survivorship all the more remarkable.
