British Colony. Victoria Proof Medallic "City Hall" Dollar 1867 PR61 PCGS, Hong Kong mint, KM-Unl., Prid-318. 38mm. Plain edge. Struck from the obverse die of a standard Victorian Hong Kong Dollar (cf. KM10). An impressive medallic issue produced by the Hong Kong mint to commemorate the laying of the foundation stone of the first City Hall and distributed to attendants of the celebratory ceremony. Only appearing at auction once every few years, we've had unusual pleasure of handling two in just the last year, the previous example an UNC Details from the Glorium Collection. Here we present a highly attractive PR61, clearly an aesthetic outlier, possessing an appreciable myriad of vibrant tones; lilac and peach to the central devices developing to a gentle cerulean and tangerine gripping the edges. A fascinating relic of colonial Hong Kong and one that will doubtlessly be met with an elevated bidder enthusiasm.
