Description

Republic Sun Yat-sen "Birds Over Junk" Dollar Year 21 (1932) MS64 PCGS, KM-Y344, L&M-108, Kann-622, Chang-CH204, WS-0144. Residing very near the peak of recorded quality for the type, it is no understatement to remark that the availability of the famed "Birds over Junk" Dollar falls off a cliff above this level--just 70 pieces ranking between one and two grade points finer across the NGC and PCGS censuses combined. Though relegated to be a one-year type owing to popular distaste for its reverse design at the time--which was thought to smack of Imperial, expansionist Japanese imagery--this fact certainly has created a treasured rarity for Chinese collectors today. Housed in an older generation PCGS green label holder, it seems fair to say that in-hand viewing confirms a surface quality relatively akin to that of pieces seen in Gem Mint State, with just the occasional sign of contact over the higher points of the design capping the grade. Of further note as the finest representative we present in the current sale, and a piece which has long been off the market.
