Description

LOWER DANUBE. Imitating Thasos. Ca. 2nd-1st centuries BC. AR tetradrachm (33mm, 16.49 gm, 11h). NGC AU 5/5 - 2/5, bent. Head of Dionysus right, crowned with ivy, wearing mitra / ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟΥΣ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΘΑΣΙΩΝ (corrupted, with pellets forming the points of each letter), Heracles standing facing, head left, lion skin in left hand, resting right hand on club covered in pellets. Göbl, OTA Class III. Cf. HGC 6, 359 (for prototype). Cf. SNG Copenhagen 1040-5 (for prototype).
