Description

Philip IV Cob 8 Reales 1652-NR VF Details (Sea Salvaged) NGC, Nuevo Reino mint, KM7.1, Cal-1549-1550, Restrepo-M46.10-12. 19.29gm. A rather scarce date with either of the two assayer's initials varieties that are known (PoRAS or PoRMS), entirely undocumented by Calbeto, and representing only the second example we have yet offered. Owing to the recovery of many such pieces from the 1656 Maravillas wreck off of Grand Bahama Island, few examples survive in very appreciable condition. Despite clear saltwater corrosion on the present example, the strike itself appears to be far finer than the assigned grade would seem to indicate. We would note that while the assayer's initials are entirely obscured on this piece, it was cataloged in the Lasser sale as PoRMS. Ex. Joseph R. Lasser Collection, Part II (Ponterio & Associates Auction 137, January 2006, Lot 372)
