Louis XIV 5 Sols (1/12 Ecu) 1670-A F15 NGC, Paris mint, KM199.1 (under France), Br-502 (R4), LeRoux-251 (R7), Zay, Histoire monétaire des colonies françaises, pg. 41, 2, Breen-256, Hodder, "An American Collector's Guide to the Coins of Nouvelle France," 3, VG-2, Maz-2, Gad-2, Lec-186, Robins-29001. A classic, one-year French colonial type authorized for circulation in New France, Acadia, the French settlements in Newfoundland, and the French West Indies, and one that is both scarce and highly sought in all conditions. Having circulated widely, survivors of the issue are normally heavily worn, with many showing adjustment marks and flaws in the dies. Though extensively circulated, the present offering nonetheless retains a clear expression of all the basic details, including an appreciable bust of Louis XIV, as well as the outlines of the reverse shield and fleur-de-lis contained within.
