Description

Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1712-A MS64 NGC, Paris mint, KM405.1, Ciani-1810, Dup-1448, Gad-264 (R), L4L-350 (R2). An already fleeting type that climbs to an entirely new tier of rarity in this exquisitely fine state of preservation. Both naked eye observation and close scrutiny with the aid of a loupe suggests a degree of care in the striking and preservation of this specimen that is far above its peers, even with no other examples approaching this piece in the certified population. Only mildly adjusted at the centers with a small planchet imperfection in the king's hair, not a mark of major or minor consequence occurs over the sleek, satin surfaces, a glittering luster picking out every curl of Louis' coiffure and the lightly textured surfaces of the raised features. Quite simply an offering that stands in a league all its known, and very likely the finest even the most scrupulous collector could hope to acquire. Ex. Gallia Collection (Christie's October 1987, Lot 275)
