Jean II le Bon (1350-1364) gold Mouton d'Or ND (from 1355) MS62 NGC, Paris mint, Fr-280, Ciani-354, Dup-291. 4.69gm. Emission from 17 January 1355. +AGn' • DЄI • QVI • TOLL' • PC'CA • mVDI (abbreviatory mark above V) • mISЄRЄRЄ • nOB' (pellet within annulet stops), nimbate Agnus Dei standing left, head turned right, long cross with banner behind; all within tressure broken by IOh' | RЄX below / +XP'C: VIИCIT: XP'C: RЄGИAT: XP'C: IMPЄRAT (double voided quadrilobe stops), cross fleury with lis in angles, within quatrefoil with lis in spandrels. Essentially of choice quality, and notably challenging as such, this piece shows some evidence of minor stippling in the obverse field, likely as the result of a slightly rusted die. On the whole fully executed and strikingly unbent, the offering stands among the finest examples of the type we have offered to date, with the certified population witnessing a steep drop-off above this technical grade.
