Description

Jean II le Bon (1350-1364) gold Ecu d'Or a la chaise ND (from 1351) MS60 NGC, Paris mint, Fr-276, Ciani-352, Dup-289C. 4.40gm. 4th Emission (from 22 September 1351). +IOhAnnЄS: DЄI | •• GRA •• | FRAnCORVM: RЄX (double pellet within annulet stops), Jean seated facing on Gothic throne, sword in right hand, left resting on a shield, all within tressure with pellets and trefoils in spandrels / +XPC: VIИCIT: XPC: RЄGИAT: XPC: IИPЄRAT (double saltire stops), cross fleurée within quadrilobe, leaves on points and trefoils in spandrels, a pellet next to each trefoil. Considerably finer than could usually be expected from this generally more difficult type from Jean's reign, virtually always found with conditional issues, typically associated with their use in jewelry. Indeed, the Briand specimen graded as a mere XF Details (Removed from Jewelry), with the Gallia piece, while ungraded, was called "fine" by Christie's and seeming to show heavy circulation wear. Presently the single finest seen by NGC, and the sole Mint State graded specimen they have yet certified, this coin's abundance of luster and lack of serious conditional issues will come as a welcomed sight for serious collectors.
