Description

Philippe VI (1328-1350) gold Lion d'Or ND (from 1338) AU55 NGC, Paris mint, Fr-265, Ciani-290, Dup-250. 4.84gm. Emission from 31 October 1338. • Ph': DЄI: GRΛ (mark of contraction above) • | • FRAnC (mark of contraction above): RЄX • (annulet and triple annulet stops), Philippe crowned and seated facing within a Gothic stall, lis tipped scepter in left hand, cross-tipped scepter supported in left; a lion laying at his feet / + :XP'C: VInCIT: XP'C: RЄGИAT: XP'C: IИPЄRAT (annulet and triple annulet stops), cross fleurdelisée within quadrilobe, crowns in spandrels. A selection noteworthy for its markedly "clean" presentation and carefully rendered designs. To date only the second example of the type we have offered, we would note that while superseded by the technically finer Briand example in terms of numerical grade (MS63), the present offering is by far the better struck of the two, and additionally comes on a much fuller flan than the piece in the Gallia Collection.
