Description

Aquitaine. Edward the Black Prince gold Noble Guyennois a la Rose (Pavillon d'Or) ND (1362-1372) AU Details (Obverse Damage) NGC, Bordeaux mint, Fr-5, Dup-1120, S-8123, Elias-149 (R), W&F-154A 6/e (R2). 5.34gm. 1st Emission. ЄD: P'O: Gn'S: RЄG' | ΛnGL: PnPS: ΛQI (double rosette stops), Edward standing facing beneath a Gothic portico, sword in right hand, raising left, two leopards couchant at his feet; two ostrich feathers curved to right at either side / +Dn'S: ΛIVTO': PTЄCIO: mЄ: Ƶ (retrograde): IIPO: SPΛVIT: COR: mЄVm: B (double voided quatrefoil stops), cross quernée within ornamental quatrefoil, lions or leopards in first and four quarters, lis in second and third; rosette or cinquefoil in center, trefoils in outer spandrels. A generally scarce example of this 1st Emission for the type, displaying a tiny rosette in the center of the reverse cross quernée, rather than the Є seen on the 2nd Emission. Despite what appears to be a small test punch by the leftmost finial of the portico, this mark is of little visual consequence and does nothing to hamper the coin's eye appeal. Indeed, a great clarity of detail is present throughout the designs, with not a trace of bending present in the flan. This is the first representative of this mint and emission we have presented, and appears to be one of only a very small handful to have come to auction in recent years. Ex. Künker Auction 264 (June 2015, Lot 3152)
