Description

Carolingian. Charles the Bald (840-877) Denier ND (before 855-864) AU (Chipped, Fragile), Orleans mint, Class 1, MEC I-835 var., MG-944, Dep-725, Nou-52, Coupland-Plate 21, 18. 19mm. 0.99gm. Later form gate. +CΛRLVS REX FR, cross pattée, pellet in each angle / •+• ΛVRE | LI | ΛNIS (S sideways), city gate with cross below. A fairly attractive piece in spite of the fragility of its flan, a lightly golden luster still pervading the reverse city gate scene. Always coveted as one of the few Carolingian "monumental" types--and the sole such issue from Charles' reign. Sold with a very old handwritten collector's tag, which misattributes the issue to Charlemagne and then Charles the Simple(!), likely suggesting that it stems from a time before many of the standard works on Carolingian coinage had been published.
