Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier ND (793-814) XF40 NGC, Melle mint, Class 3, MEC I-923-931, MG-1063, Dep-606 (Charlemagne of Charles the Bald), Nou-94 (cf. Nou-40 under Charles the Bald). 1.50gm. +CΛRLVS REX FR, cross pattée / +METVLLO, Karolus monogram. Executed on an even, unbent flan, with just the slightest evidence of cleaning in the distant past. We would note that, while traditionally attributed to either Charlemagne or Charles the Bald, Simon Coupland has more recently published diagnostics for distinguishing the Melle deniers of the two rulers, this coin soundly belonging to the issues of the former.
