Merovingian. Anonymous gold Tremissis ND (c. AD 580-670) Good XF, Amiens or Chartres mint?, cf. Belfort-140 and 1434. 11mm. 1.20gm. Imperial-style diademed bust right (legend almost entirely off-flan) / cross ancrée on two steps (legend almost entirely off-flan). A very peculiar issue whose attribution is made tenuous owing to the fact that the majority of the legends have been struck off-flan. Though the portrait style bears certain affinities to Belfort-140 (Amiens), with the bottom portions of the legends closely conforming to the legends AMIANIS C / DVLLOBERTV M of that piece (see also Prou-1111-1113). This specimen, however, shows a plain cross on three steps, rather than a cross ancrée, which seems to only appear on steps on the issues of Chartres (cf. Belfort-1434). Though the bust type appears quite different on Belfort's illustration for this issue, the legends also show similarities to what can be seen here.
