Flanders. Anonymous gold Imitative Noble 1582 AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Ghent mint, Fr-242, Delm-532 (R2), Schneider-203. 6.76gm. Struck by the autonomous city of Ghent in accordance with a resolution by the councilors dated 11 November 1581, in revolt against King Philip II of Spain. A very rare emission produced just on the eve of the Siege of Ghent in 1583--a key event of the Eighty Years' War that resulted in the surrender of the city and the dissolution of the Calvinist Republic of Ghent, pushing the effort for the anti-Spanish revolt into Holland. Though designated as cleaned on the holder, this appears exceptionally moderate, and has done next to nothing to mute the coin's overall eye appeal. This is the only example of the type that we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent years.
