Description

South Africa Bechuanaland Boer War 1 Pound 3.1900 Pick S655b PMG About Uncirculated 50 Net. Mafeking was the colonial capital of Bechuanaland from the 1880s until the 1960s, at which time Gaborone was built in the years leading up to independence for Botswana. At the turn of the 20th century, this small city hosted a major event in the Boer War known as the Mafeking Siege. Local notes were issued to be used during the siege and subsequently redeemed at the Standard Bank, Mafeking branch. There notes are rare today across all denominations and variety. Pinholes are mentioned, and some center splits. Rare in this excellent grade and a historic note from a pivotal period in the history of South Africa.
