Qing Dynasty. Mu Zong (Tong Zhi) Pattern (Mother Coin) 10 Cash ND (1862-1874) Certified 80 by Gong Bo Grading, Board of Revenue mint (Uncertain Branch), cf. FD-2595 (for standard issue), Hartill-22.1129 (same), Jen-1658 (for ancestor coin, mother coin from this mint not listed), Shanghai Museum-2094. 33.5mm. 13.3gm. Expressing an even brassy color, contrasting nicely with the darker accents of the inner recessed surfaces. One of the few mother coins (mu qian) from Tong Zhi's reign we have been able to locate, with the majority of fine-style Cash-sized issues carrying his reign title being later charms. For the sake of completeness, we note the presence of minor tooling marks around the characters, hardly an unusual feature for these "Patterns," which were frequently hand-finished and enhanced after being cast.
