Description

Kiangnan. Kuang-hsü Dollar CD 1898 AU Details (Graffiti) NGC, Nanking mint, KM-Y145a.2, L&M-217 var. (there, with raised eyeballs), Kann-71b, Chang-CH66 var. (there, with raised eyeballs), Shanghai Museum-451, WS-0799, Wenchao-647 (rarity 1 star). Dragon with incuse eyes (no eyeball) variety. Highly challenging as an issue, with the vast majority of surviving examples coming down to the present day heavily cleaned, damaged, or chopmarked. Despite a small pair of X's by the characters kuang and yuan on the obverse (reverse as holdered), the piece otherwise retains boldly defined details accented by a charming russet peripheral toning that clearly situate it on the upper end of its assigned AU grade. Ex. Robert Raymond Ruff Collection (Heritage Auction #3032, April 2014, Lot 24409)
