Description

Qing Dynasty. Kuang-hsü Hupeh Yuansi Changyuankezi ("Fine Silk Oval") Sycee of 7-1/2 Taels ND (19th-20th Century), Cribb-F30 (this piece). 66x37mm. 263.11gm. Stamped in two columns, the right reading: "Guang Xu Yuan Bao" (Principal ingot of the Kuang-hsü Period), and the left reading: "Hu Bei Sheng Zao" (Made in Hubei [Hupeh] Province). An intriguing piece, not least for its placement in Cribb's catalog of Sycee in the British Museum under his "Forgeries" section. Cribb describes that pieces such as this represent genuine blank ingots (in this case of his Class LXXXV) with later forger's stamps applied, in this case stamps 4 and 10, respectively. Of particular interest, however, is the fact that this very example is plated by Cribb under F30, where he comments that he saw it in trade in 1976. Sold as is, no returns. This lot can be submitted to Gong Bo Grading for certification after the auction at the buyer's request. If you would like to utilize this option, please contact HK@HA.com.
