Description

Kuang-hsü Fantasy Tael CD 1885-Dated MS62 NGC, cf. KM-X119 (slightly different bust), Kann-B13, WS-1349-6 (same), Wenchao-1316 (same), SHI-56. Imitated by Jie Yaodong (Tientsin). A very elusive fantasy type in all states of preservation, and almost universally found either with some evidence of circulation or in outright Details grades due to past mishandling. Exhibiting a much more refined style to the Emperor's portrait than the examples plated in the Standard Catalog's Unusual volume and Wang Chun Li--which show a broader, flatter nose and larger eyes--the offering complements this precision of execution with an iridescent chroma over antique silver fields. While the issue's high relief often leads to perceivable flatness atop the nose, here this is exceeding mild and keeps from obscuring the more intricate elements of the surrounding design. Very near the peak of the certified population, with NGC certifying one MS63 finer.
