Description

ARMENIAN KINGDOM. Kings of Armenia Minor. Aristobulus (AD 54-92). AE (26mm, 12.55 gm, 12h). NGC VF 4/5 - 2/5, countermark, smoothing. Nicopolis ad Lycum, or Chalkis, dated Regnal Year 17 (AD 70/1). BACIΛEΩC APICTOBOYΛOY ET•IZ•, diademed head of Aristobulus left; monogram in square countermark on neck / TITΩ / OΥECΠA/CIANΩ AY/TOKPATO/P CEBAC/TΩ, legend in six lines within wreath. Meshorer 367a. Hendin 1258. Red and green patina throughout. Based on the issue date, one would expect to see Vespasian's name on the reverse as he was emperor at the time, however, Aristobulus honored Titus instead since he was instrumental in ending the Jewish Revolt, for which this issue was minted.
