Description

Hudson's Bay brass Counterstamped Trade Token ND XF, Br-Unl., FT-Unl., cf. Gingras-pg. 71. 23mm. 4.20gm. Plain edge. An intriguing example struck on a brass planchet with beaded border, with the letters H.B.C H. on both sides (the H reportedly standing for "Hazelton"). More often seen on imitating George III Spade Guineas, Gingras notes: "It is a known fact that many Indians had more faith in Hudson's Bay money than in official government issues, and it was not uncommon to see coins from various countries counterstamped H.B.C. and used in trade." According to Mr. Partrick's notes, this is one of two pieces known. Sold with old collector envelope detailing provenance. Ex. Jeffrey Hoare Auction (March 1994, Lot 695); Reportedly also ex. Warren Baker, Don Stewart, and J. E. Trudel
