Louis XVI Ecu (6 Livres) L'An 4 (1792)-I AU58 NGC, Limoges mint, KM615.6, Dav-1335. Typical, weakness found around the king's hair and Genius' torso, though the design is overall well-impressed and sharp for the issue. Struck sometime after the storming of the Tuileries Palace in August and the declaration of the First Republic by the Legislative Assembly on 22 September 1792, this issue clearly asserted that the king was subject to the law, juxtaposing the affirmation written in French with the figure of Genius inscribing a scroll with the word Constitution, and a fasces topped with a Phrygian cap. Dated dually in the Gregorian and new Revolutionary calendar, this issue marks a France in transition, fueled by ideas of Liberty but not quite at the point of regicide.
