Description

Pomerania - Swedish Occupation. Christina Taler 1642 MS63 NGC, Stettin mint, KM193.2, Dav-4573, AAJ-15, Hagander-175. Beautiful as a type, Christina's youthful bust expressed in a distinctive realism that readily contrasts with the usual almost caricatured style that so often characterizes her coinage. Indeed, the emissions of her reign can often be divided into two classes of workmanship: one with generally flat and crude features, and the other of exceptionally fine style and towing the line between lifelike and romanticized--the envy of numismatists. Evenly toned and remarkably precise, this specimen clearly falls into the latter group, every element from the thick curls of her coiffure to the lace on her dress expressed in painstaking detail, overlaid in dove-gray patina, and hardly suffering from major light doubling. The finest certified at either major grading service to-date, and a full 10 grade points above the next highest at NGC. Sold with old Eric P. Newman Collection envelope. Ex. Eric P. Newman Collection (Heritage Auction #3029, January 2014, Lot 30293); "Colonel" E.H.R Green Estate
