Description

Christian V Speciedaler 1671-GK AU55 NGC, Copenhagen mint, KM317 (6 known), Dav-409B, Hede-63B, Salv-21, Sieg-60.2 (R). With PIETATE ET JUSTITIA ANNO MDCLXXI on edge. Danish East India Company issue. An extremely rare trade issue, struck not long after the re-chartering of the Danish East India Company in 1670, with a new focus on trade with China at Canton after the disastrous end to the ventures of the first company in India. While some slight rub atop the highest points of the design accounts for the grade, this, if anything, pairs nicely with the coin's smoky plumb patina to produce a softly aged, and highly appealing, finish. Presently the sole example certified, we note that the 1988 Harald Salvesen catalog suggested that only six examples of this type were then known, of which three are located in museums. Ex. Joseph R. Lasser Collection (CNG Triton XVIII, January 2015, Lot 1501)
