Description

Titus, as Augustus (AD 79-81). AV aureus (20mm, 7.28 gm, 6h). NGC XF 5/5 - 3/5, scratches. Rome, AD 80. IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M, laureate head of Titus right / TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P, winged thunderbolt on draped square pulvinar. RIC II 23a. RIC II.1, 117. Calicó 782. Ex Malter Galleries, Auction (4 February 1992), lot 346 RIC II (2001) describes this series as "perhaps the eruption of Vesuvius that prompted the issue of the series of "supplicatio" coins showing the exhibition of the emblems of the gods on "pulvinari" in their temples. Thus, the thunderbolt on throne for Jupiter, the corn-ears on throne for Ceres, the shield on throne (used by Domitian) for Minerva, the dolphin and anchor may represent Neptune and the dolphin and tripod for Apollo. The wreath on curule chair is uncertain".
