Piacenza. Ranuccio I Farnese gold 2 Doppie d'Oro (Quadrupla) 1595 AU58 NGC, MIR-1137/7 (R2), Bellesia-9/E (R). 13.08gm. Struck in the name of his father, Alessandro Farnese (1586-1591). ALEX • FAR • PLAC • TE (ligate) • PAR • DVX • III • ETC (TE ligate) •, draped, cuirassed bust of Alessandro left / • PLACENTIA • FLORET • 1595, she-wolf standing left, three branches surmounted by crown behind; AP initials below. Comparatively handsome quality for this posthumous issue, the vast majority of examples coming shallowly struck and heavily worn. The present piece exhibits a wonderful clarity and is nearly perfectly centered on a highly round flan.
