Riga. Free City 18 Ferding (Taler) 1574 MS61 NGC, Dav-8459, Haljak-872 (R6). A superbly rare example of this fleeting and short-lived crown-sized coinage issued for Riga in its capacity as a Free City of the Holy Roman Empire between the collapse of the Livonian Order in 1561 and its absorption into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1581. One of only three dates the type was struck, the coin is likely amongst the finest surviving pieces, with the last example that appeared at auction bring over $16,000 in October of last year.
