Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1702/1-P MS63 NGC, Pernambuco mint, KM99, LMB-39, Gomes-33.01. A superb example of this Brazilian gold rarity, which only occasionally appears on auction and even then tends to be seen impaired or in lower Mint State grades at best. The 4000 Reis of 1702 was the only gold coin struck at the Pernambuco mint (P), which primarily produced silver coins (mostly 640 Reis) in the short period it operated from 1700 to 1702, marking gold issues from there as ones of particular importance to the wider Brazilian series. Yet further, this selection, with its satiny surfaces glistening with golden luster and fields ranked with fine die polish lines, remains the absolute highest-certified example by either PCGS or NGC, across which there are currently only four examples seen to date. Between the intersection of type and conditional rarity, and a degree of eye appeal that perhaps even exceeds what is normally expected for the assigned grade, the offering at hand remains a contender for the highest caliber collection of Brazilian gold.
