Description

Septimius Severus (AD 193-211), with Caracalla. AV aureus (20mm, 7.24 gm, 5h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 3/5. Rome, AD 202-210. IMPP•INVICTI•PII•AVGG, laureate, draped, jugate busts right of Septimius Severus (on left, seen from behind) and Caracalla (on right, seen from front) / VICTORIA-PARTHICA MAXIMA, Victory advancing left, wreath upward in right hand, cradling palm in left arm. RIC IV.I 311 var. (draped and cuirassed). Calicó 2597c (this coin illustrated). BMCRE 266 var. (same). Biaggi 1127 var. (same). Excellent centering, with two handsome portraits. Ex Provence Collection (Triton XXIII, 14 January 2020), lot 790; Marc Melcher Collection (Triton VI, 14 January 2003), lot 931 Hill suggests this issue was struck to mark the dedication of the Arch of Septimius Severus built the previous year for his victories over the Parthians.
