Description

P. Satrienus (77 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 5h). NGC Choice Fine, light graffito. Rome. Helmeted head of young Mars right; LXXXI behind / ROMA / P•SATRIE/NVS, she-wolf prowling left, right forepaw raised. Crawford 388/1b. Sydenham 781a. Satriena 1. From the Bacchus Collection Per Crawford, the moneyer is a P. Satrienus, otherwise unknown, but may be a freedwoman. The wolf on the reverse has no connection to the she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus, but was perhaps adopted as a symbol for Rome after the defeat of the rebel Italians to equated Rome to a predatory wolf. If this is correct, this issue may be perhaps anti-Italian in nature.
