Description

C. Valerius Flaccus (ca. 82 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 3.82 gm, 6h). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 3/5, scratches. Massalia, special issue. Draped bust of Victory right, wearing pendant earring and necklace, hair tied in knot at back / C•VAL•FLA-IMPERAT (VAL ligate), aquila right between two standards inscribed H (Hastati) and P (Principes); EX•-S•C across fields. Crawford 365/1a. Sydenham 747. Valeria 12. From the Bacchus Collection This issue was struck by Flaccus while proconsul in Gaul, and is associated with the first moves made by Sulla against Q. Sertorius in Spain. The symbolism on the reverse is simply that of a military victory.
