MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). Plated AR tetradrachm (27mm, 16.40 gm, 1h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5. Ancient forgery of posthumous issue of Amphipolis (?), 315-294 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / ΛΛEΞAHΔPOY, Zeus seated left on backless throne, left leg drawn back, feet on stool, eagle in right hand, scepter in left; Ξ in left field. Price -. A well-executed forgery overall, but does not copy a specific coin listed in Price. The style appears to be modeled after Amphipolis, but it's unclear if the field symbol copied a dated tetradrachm or something else.
