Syria Banque de Syrie 500 Piastres 1.8.1919 Pick 5 PMG Fine 12. The Bank of Syria, initially headquartered in Beirut, was founded in 1919 to provide currency after World War I. Interestingly, these notes were also used in Lebanon, as they were issued through Beirut. At the time of cataloging, this is the highest denomination of the series that is known to exist in issued form. Only two examples have been graded in the PMG Population Report to date, confirming the rarity of this banknote. At the time, 500 Piastres was equivalent to 5 Pounds, which was a substantial sum. For this reason, only small batches were printed. We have not offered this type previously, and no completed auction results for issued banknotes are available from the obvious sources. Missing from many collections; this is an exciting offering worthy of serious consideration.
