Description

Bermuda Monetary Authority 50 Dollars 1.5.1974 Pick 32a PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. A simply incredible example of this rare type, this issue was born out of necessity and important as such. The Bermuda Monetary Authority was established in 1969, but did not begin issuing banknotes until 1974. It was determined that change should be incremental; hence the Bermuda Government was tasked with issuing its first decimal banknotes. Dates and prefixes were added out of necessity. The first two banknotes issued by the Monetary Authority were the $20 and $50. Only 300,000 $50 notes were issued bearing the 1974 date. Inflation increased in the second half of the 1970s, which necessitated the issuance of more $50 notes, in 1978. At the time of cataloging, this example is tied with one other atop the PMG Population Report for this date, which happens to be very same note in the previous lot. Its high value coupled with limited issuance makes this first date very rare today. This is the second note in a consecutive pair offered today.
