Description

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR tetradrachm (26mm, 17.02 gm, 3h). NGC XF 5/5 - 4/5. Late lifetime or early posthumous issue of Pella, ca. 325-315 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, feet on stool, eagle in right hand, scepter in left; A above bee seen from above below strut. Price -, cf. 228 (bee in left field). The marks on the reverse lead this cataloger to believe the bee was originally in the left field as on Price 228, but was removed from the die and added under the A beneath the throne.
