Yorkshire. Sheffield gold Proof "Wilson & Younge" 1/2 Guinea Token 1812 PR62 Cameo PCGS, Davis-37, Dalton-84. Engrailed edge. An incredibly rare and somewhat anomalous type within the 19th-century British token series, existing as one of just three gold token types produced during the period. While there is little doubt that Wilson & Younge, a button manufacturer in Sheffield, would have had access to the machinery necessary to produce coins, the reasons for the production of this issue are much less certain, as the majority of copper and silver tokens struck during the period were made to supply for a shortage of small change brought about by the Napoleonic Wars. One of just two examples certified by PCGS, this is the first such piece we have handled.
