Description

MYSIA. Cyzicus. Ca. 550-450 BC. EL stater (22mm, 16.12 gm). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 4/5. Winged canine running left, head reverted; tunny fish left below / Quadripartite mill-sail incuse square punch. Greenwell 140. Von Fritze I 104. Boston MFA 1433. Very rare with just a handful known. The addition of wings to non-alate animals on coins of this period is not uncommon on coins of Cyzicus, Mytilene and Phocaia. Winged boars and lions are the most common, winged stags and bulls on Cyzicene coinage are far scarcer, with winged canine being the most unusual and rare.
