Description

Rama V silver Essai 1/4 Baht (Salung) RS 128 (1909) MS66 NGC, Paris mint, KM-E2, VG-Unl., LeMay-Unl., Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-pg. 181, Plate F55. By Henri-Auguste Patey. An already excessively rare essai that escalates to an entirely new tier of conditional scarcity at this supreme gem Mint State level, with seemingly none certified finer at either NGC or PCGS. Over the past 15+ years of auction records, we have been able to locate only a single other example being available--an MS65 which brought nearly $13,000 in our August 2014 ANA Sale #3033 (lot 23404). Clearly carefully stored away not long after its production, the present piece has developed an appealing rainbow of iridescent tones on the reverse, pairing nicely with the natural salt-gray of the surfaces. Kicking off a three piece Essai set that serves as a cornerstone of this selection of Thai coins from the Dr. Norman Jacobs Collection, the offering is sure to come fiercely contested.
