Russia State Assignat 10 Rubles 1799 Pick A9a PMG Choice Fine 15. Pick number A9a spans a range of dates from 1787 to 1801, with this piece issued under Emperor Paul I, who reigned for just a few short years between 1796 and 1801. His reign ended with his assassination shortly after he discovered massive corruption in the Russian Treasury. His assassins were likely nobility involved in the corruption and the target of some of his social policies. Each of the dates from this issue is incredibly rare, with no other 1799 dated examples offered in recent years that we could locate. In our FUN 2018 auction, we sold a PMG graded 25 example dated 1798 for more than $33,000. That November, a very problematic 1801 still topped $13,000 at auction. Some edge damage is noted by PMG.
