Description

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR tetradrachm (25mm, 17.15 gm, 1h). XF. Late lifetime to early posthumous issue of Cyprus, Citium, under Pumiathon, ca. 325-320 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / AΛEΞANΔPOY-BAΣIΛEΩΣ, Zeus seated left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, feet on ground line, eagle in right hand, scepter in left; KT (Citium) monogram in left field. Price 3110. Note - the only matches in Price with the KT monogram in the left field and royal title below are both from Citium (3108 and 3110). 3108 has the left leg drawn back, leaving 3110 the only published possibility. On close inspection, there appears to be an AX monogram in the left field to the right of the KT monogram, as well as a small pellet in the right field between the throne and scepter. Reused dies from a different mint?
