Obverse with a portrait of Alexander II surrounded by the inscription Б . М . АЛЕКСАНДРЪ II ИМП. И САМОД. ВСЕРОСC. (By the grace of God Alexander Alexander II Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia).
Reverse with the two-line legend КАВКАЗЪ 1871 ГОДА (Caucasus of the year 1871).

This medal was Instituted on 29 September 1871. Some 2450 silver medals were made and awarded to citizens of the Caucasus who accompanied Alexander II on his trip in the unstable mountainous region of the Caucasus and deputies who were presented to the Emperor.
