Gordian III, AD 238 – 244. Gold Aureus (21.4 mm, 5.16 g.). Rome mint, AD 241-242. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right. Rev. VIRTVTI AVGVSTI, Hercules standing right, naked, resting right hand on hip, left hand on club set on rock, lion-skin beside club. RIC IV.3, 108; Cohen 401; Calicó 3242. A rarer reverse type. Well centered, lustrous. About extremely fine.
