Kings of Cappadocia, Ariarathes IX Eusebes Philopator, circa 100-85 BC. AR Drachm (19 mm, 3,58 g.). Eusebeia mint under Mount Argaios, RY 12 = 89/8. Diademed head of Ariarathes IX to right. Rev. BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ / APIAPAΘOY / EYΣEBOYΣ Athena standing front, head to left, holding Nike in her right hand and resting her left on shield set on ground, spear leaning against arm; in inner left field, monogram; in exergue, IB. HGC 7, 845. Simonetta, Coins, 5. Ariarathes IX was the son of the Pontic King Mithradates VI. Mithradates murdered his nephew Ariarathes VII, and placed his 8-year-old son on the throne of Cappadocia. Extremely Fine, boldly struck with a lovely yellowish hues and beautiful Hellenistic portrait.
