Description

★ Signed by engraver Telephantos ★

Thessaly, Pharsalos. Late 5th-mid 4th century BC. AR Drachm (20mm, 6.00 g.), signed by the engraver Telephantos, with his initials on the obverse and on the reverse. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet with raised cheek pieces; in tiny letters behind neck, ΤΗ. Rev. Φ-Α / Ρ-Σ (last two letters retrograde) Thessalian cavalryman riding horse prancing to right, wearing petasos, chlamys and chiton, and holding a lagobolon over his right shoulder; in exergue, ΤΗ. BCD I Thessaly 1284 (without IΠ). Remarkable coin signed by the engraver Telephantos, particullar style, girlish portrait of Athens on the obverse even slightly off centered (chin) showing the goddess slightly younger and determined, her curly hairs fall gently under the helmet which is exceptionally well presented on that coin with all details clearly visible (even crested element entire). Reverse is also very interesting and reveals the skilful conduct of military activity by a Thessalian cavalryman who is riding with an incredible synchronicity and lightness. Good Very Fine. Very Rare.
